Did you know that if you are unsuccessful in filling your archery either sex deer tag in Kansas there is a week in January where you can fill it with a firearm? It's true! The catch - it becomes an antlerless only tag. I'm okay with that because as the saying goes... you can't eat the antlers!
In addition to being able to fill your doe and buck tag that week (antler less only!), you can purchase additional doe tags. Troy had the extra tags in his pocket. I only had my buck and doe tag to fill. We took advantage of knowing where the deer were bedded on a property that we barely hunted that season and as they made their way out to the corn field, we made quick work of filling tags. In a matter of minutes, we had FIVE deer on the ground. It was actually a little comical, as Troy was on one side of a hay bale and I was leaned against the other. I heard the first shot go off as Troy took down the lead doe. When they all turned around to head towards my side of the hay bale, I heard Troy whisper loudly, "Shoot" as he took down another one. I was trying to find the biggest doe and make sure I didn't shoot a buck. It was a little chaotic and I was surprised how they didn't take off running after the first shot. There were probably 30+ deer! Thank goodness for friends to help us carry out, gut and skin all these deer. My daughter's sled also came in handy that day. Days like this we remember for years to come. How many tags have you filled in ONE day?
